Motorola Sold Refurbished Devices with Old Customers' Data

Motorola Mobility announced recently that some of its refurbished tablets have been sold with previous owners' data still intact on the devices. The company has learned of 100 cases where the original owner's data was not completely erased from a Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi tablet before resale.

New owners of the refurbished tablets may be able to access photos, documents, user names and passwords stored by a previous owner. Motorola is offering a free two-year membership to an identification protection program for customers whose data was not erased.

We often think that data breaches occur due to the work of highly skilled hackers. But as this article demonstrates, simple business mistakes can also lead to leaks. Other common examples include employees losing laptops and smart phones.

Angel Investment Growth in Chicago

Angel investors, the wealthy individuals whose small, get-me-startedGold Bars investments play a key role in business creation, are zeroing in on Chicago's tech startups. Chicago tech startups received $16.1 million in angel investment last year, up 38 percent from $11.7 million in 2010, according to data collected by local tech community website BuiltInChicago.org. That growth rate far outpaces the national trend: Angel investment rose 4.4 percent nationally in the first half of 2011 from the first half of 2010, according to the Center for Venture Research at the University of New Hampshire.

Why is angel investing growing in Chicago? The city's tech sector is maturing: A growing pool of promising young companies is demonstrating more savvy than predecessors did, thanks to support from a slightly older group of mentors and investors from success-story companies such as Orbitz Worldwide Inc. and Groupon Inc. As a result, angel investors are hoping to buy into Silicon Valley-caliber companies at off-brand prices.

Chicago Area Leads Nation in Copper Thefts

The Chicago Tribune reports that the Chicago area leads the nationLincoln Penny ininsurance claims related to thefts of copper and other metals. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, the Chicago area had 42 more claims than were generated in the New York and northern New Jersey region, which ranked No. 2.

From Jan. 1, 2009, through 2011 claims were up 81% nationwide. The increase was driven by rising prices for metals, especially copper. And not only is the frequency of thefts increasing, but thieves also are becoming more brazen. A recent theft of copper wiring at an airport in Modesto, California, for example, blacked out runway approach lights.
